The project is about how wars and other disasters can change society, how it stops processes of progress and positive changes in relationships between men and women.
Women have been fighting for their rights for centuries. However, when the war comes, for women there is a dilemma, to accept patriarchal traditions or not, to escape the army or not.
Not all young men are ready to die in the war. Even, patriots or the brave ones. Those who don’t want to change their lives, leave their family and go to the army should think about excuses, and how to explain to themselves and society why they escape the army. Women have another situation; they are not obligated to fight in the hottest places of conflict. Of course, they can help in different ways, but it’s not the same. I ask myself if I have the same fear as young soldiers. I think, yes – they are also terrified, and they aren’t physically and mentally ready to fight. But I can use my gender, I can say that I am a weak woman who wasn’t created for war. However, who was made?
For this project, I cut five linocuts of women’s dresses in natural size, that were displayed on the hangers with combat boots under them. The skirt helps to hide my fear and avoid some duties.
So, if women want to be equal with men and have equal rights and possibilities should they have the same risks and duties? Or does the war stop all discussions like that and make society more patriarchal?
